The Chartreux were a Catholic religious order founded in the 11th century. They were known for their contemplative monastic life and their vow of silence. In 1616, the Carthusian monks established a monastery in the Marseille area, which was named “La Chartreuse de Marseille”. The area that grew up around this monastery was later called the Chartreux district.

Today, although the monastery is no longer active, the Chartreux name remains associated with this area of Marseille, including the metro station that serves the area.
