Louis Armand metro station
Marseille’s Louis Armand metro station is on line 1 of the Marseille metro, also known as the red line. It is located in the La Joliette district, in the city’s 2nd arrondissement.
The station’s only entrance is a large, futuristic rotunda on the surface, and the descent into a vast aluminum tube. Underground, the station is vast and bright (thanks to the white stone used)1.
It is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility (PRM).
The station is built on two levels. The surface level houses the entrance, elevator access, ticket vending machines and ticket validation area (equipped with anti-fraud gates), followed by platform access. On the underground level, two opposite platforms frame the central double track.
Inauguration of the station
Marseille’s Louis Armand metro station was inaugurated in 2010. It was open to the public as part of the northward extension of Marseille metro line 1.
Where does the name come from ?
Marseille’s Louis Armand metro station is named after Louis Armand, a French engineer and senior civil servant. Louis Armand is best known for being the founder of RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) and for playing a key role in the development of public transport in France.
He was General Manager of RATP from 1959 to 1974, and made a significant contribution to the expansion and improvement of public transport in Paris. He also played a role in the modernization of France’s transport systems and the implementation of numerous transport projects, including the development of the Paris metro.
In tribute to his achievements in the field of transportation, the Louis Armand metro station in Marseille was named in his honor.
