Saint-Barnabé metro station
The Saint-Barnabé metro station is on line 1 of the Marseille metro, in the city’s 12th arrondissement. It is located on avenue de Saint-Barnabé, close to place de l’Église de Saint-Barnabé.
The spacious underground station was designed by Marseille architects Avérous & Simay (François Avérous, David Avérous, Suat Simay) to blend in as unobtrusively as possible on the surface. A single descent located on the Place de l’Eglise in this picturesque district of Marseille provides access to the metro at the foot of the century-old plane trees.
It is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility (PRM).
The station is built on two levels. The surface level houses the entrance, elevator access, ticket vending machines and ticket validation area (equipped with anti-fraud gates), followed by platform access. On the underground level, two opposite platforms frame the central double track.
Inauguration of the station
The Saint-Barnabé metro station was inaugurated in 2010.
Where does the name come from ?
The name of the Saint-Barnabé metro station comes from the neighborhood in which it is located, namely the Saint-Barnabé district of Marseille. The district itself was named after the nearby Saint-Barnabé church.
Saint-Barnabé is a Christian saint venerated by the Catholic Church and mentioned in the Bible’s New Testament. He was a companion of the apostle Paul on his missionary journeys. The choice of name for the metro station is therefore a reference to the church and surrounding neighborhood that gave it its name.
It’s quite common for subway stations to take the names of nearby neighborhoods or landmarks, making it easier for subway users to identify them geographically.
